James received his Juris Doctorate and was licensed to practice law in 1985 following graduation from Texas Tech University School of Law. Prior to law school, he attended the University of Houston, receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering in 1982.

James and his wife Laura have six (6) children, four (4) children-in-law, and best of all, two wonderful grandchildren. All of their children were homeschooled.
